The English Bagpipe revival has been underway
for about 20 years; Julian Goodacre has been a pioneer throughout that
time developing and playing an exciting range of pipes. His enthusiastic
championing of the English bagpipe and its music has been an inspiration
to many.
As a player he is best known as one third
of the English Bagpipe trio The Goodacre Brothers. On this CD Julian releases
himself from the confines of the rarefied atmosphere of The Goodacre
Brothers' three-part harmony, and revels in a variety of approaches, recording
for the first time the kinds of piping he has been playing for dancing
over the past twenty years. He has brought together eleven friends, all
experienced English Dance musicians, playing between them sixteen different
instruments including six varieties of bagpipes in a host of combinations
from solo to a seven piece band.
The bagpipes were once the instrument for
dancing in the English Countryside. Increasing urbanisation led to them
falling into disfavour until by the 18th Century they were regarded solely
as an instrument of the North. A wealth of old English Dance tunes has
survived for over two centuries without having been played on the pipes.
With this groundbreaking recording, Julian's
infectious enjoyment and humour breathe new life into these old tunes;
this is a celebration of English dance music with pipes once more at the
centre.
TUNE BOOKS
I supply a select range of bagpipe tune books, six of which are produced
by myself and my brothers.
When starting to play the English pipes, finding a repertoire is
obviously essential. My three Toodle-Oodle Books are full of great English
tunes, each of which is eminently pipeable. These tunes are rapidly becoming
the basis of the new English piping repertoire and are essential for all
English Bagpipers.
THE DAY IT DAWS:
The Lowland Scots Bagpipe and its Music 1400 to 1715.
This is Pete Stewart’s Scottish
companion volume to ‘Robin with the Bagpipe’. It contains music played by
bagpipers described in Scots sources from the 15th to the 17th centuries and charts the
history of piping in the Lowlands from the 15th century to the first
appearance of music set for bagpipes in the early 18th century.
"In bringing together this splendid repertoire with the historical context
within which it was set, Pete Stewart has set a new standard in the published
scholarship of the lowland piping tradition ... his research is meticulous and
penetrating .. yet remaisn highly readable .. he has acheived a synthesis of
music and history that greatly enhances our understanding of both" (Dr Gary
West, Dept of Scottish and Celtic Studies, University of Edinburgh)

ROBIN WITH THE BAGPIPE
Pete Stewart has been playing traditional dance music for over thirty
years and has been piping for fifteen of them. The fruits of his playing
and researching English piping are contained in this long awaited collection.
The book combines literary descriptions, pictorial and sculptural representations
and an historical commentary with 70 tunes from across eight centuries, many
unavailable in print elsewhere, to present a vivid picture of a more or
less forgotten aspect of English musical life, as well as offering a unique
repertoire to today’s players.
This publication is an important contribution to the reclamation of
piping traditions and should be in every piper’s instrument case.
“Bagpipes were a feature of the English scene for many centuries
and Pete Stewart has done a grand job of collecting, editing and playing
the music of this neglected tradition.”
(Roderick Cannon, author of ‘The Highland Bagpipe and its Music” and
“A Bibliography of Bagpipe Music”) MORE>> PRICE: GBP £13.00, Robin now has his own pages on this site at
Robin With The Bagpipe- The English Bagpipe and its Music
THE WHITE HOUSE HORNPIPE.
"This collection of 24 original tunes is a great little volume to have
in the pipe case or on the music stand. The fact that these are melodies-
jigs, walzes,"Scotch tunes", polkas and hornpipes- written by a piper for
pipes means that they fit under the fingers well and at the same time provide
excellent practice material because they are largely built on arpeggio
leaps that are the building blocks of all British bagpipe music. But "The
White House Hornpipe" is more than just a good technical workout book.
Before long quite a few of the tunes will be lodged in the memory. And
because they were ... composed on the pipes some of them do, after initial
familiarity is made, seem to "play themselves" .... "The White House Hornpipe"
is hand calligraphed throughout- and this makes it a very pleasant production
and represents exceptional value."
